December 2009 Newsletter

November 28, 2009

The USA Today version of the SFCC News for December 2009

I’ve been on the road for the last couple weeks touring the Carolinas, and I’m now parked in Charlotte, North Carolina recovering from an awesome Thanksgiving dinner.  Therefore, I apologize for the abbreviated newsletter and lack of fancy pictures and layouts. I don’t have the right software on my laptop. So, before I head back out on the highway (homeward bound), I thought I’d better at least get the important stuff out to you. So, here goes….

The Prez Sez!

By David Bair

The holiday season is upon us a great time to take photos of family and friends.  I hope that everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving.  As a reminder for our Christmas program we are having a photo contest dealing with lighting in three categories 1) Most Christmas Spirit; 2) Most Colorful Winter Scene; 3) Most Creative Use of Lights.  The photos should be in the standard N4C format and should be sent to me by December 10th.  My email address is davebair@sio.midco.net.  I look forward to seeing the entries.  I thought we had very good participation at our in-club competition in November.  I hope everyone enjoyed it, I learned a lot.  I find photography requires a lot of practice and awareness as I take the photos.  I am continually amazed by what I find in my photo afterwards that I didn’t notice through the viewfinder.  I look forward to our meetings in December, see you there.

Program for December 1 – A Seminar on Lighting

By Roger Rose

Do you enjoy reading about flash unit guide numbers and the inverse square law of lighting or do these discussions give you a headache? Our program for December 1 will avoid the complexities of mathematical equations and provide a more simplified and practical view of photographic lighting. The first segment of the program will consist of a PowerPoint presentation on the basics of lighting and using single and multiple flash units. The second segment will be devoted to a “show and tell” by audience volunteers, so if you have an interesting lighting tool or system you want to share please bring in to the meeting.

Here are the results of the November Competition.
