Tuesday, July 9th at 7pm in the Harold's meeting room:
Samantha Laurey, from the Argus Leader, will be our guest speaker.
"Fotojournalism is Phun"
"You don’t need to be a professional photojournalist at a publication to do visual storytelling that’s in your community, sometimes it’s just showing up and taking pictures,” said Argus Leader’s visual journalist Samantha Laurey. Laurey will be presenting the fundamentals of photojournalism for the Sioux Falls Camera Club. From pitch to publish, she will explain what goes into the process of photojournalism. Some of those topics include picture-taking, editing, caption-writing and ethics.
OK....Who is Samantha?
Samantha Laurey (b.1996) is a photojournalist covering breaking news, features, and anything South Dakota-related for the Argus Leader. She formerly worked as a freelance photographer in the San Francisco Bay Area. She also volunteers with the National Press Photographer's Association as the current Co-Chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.
Her work has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Examiner, San Francisco Standard, Bay City News Wire Service, and many hyper-local newspapers in the Bay Area like Bay Area Reporter, East Bay Express, and Pleasanton Weekly.
She received a bachelor's degree in photojournalism from San Francisco State University in 2021, where she also served as The National Press Photographers Association chapter president. Before transferring to San Francisco State University, she received her associate degree in journalism from Diablo Valley College in 2019.
Her work has been awarded by the California News Publishers Association, Hearst Journalism Awards, College Photographer of the Year, College Media Association, and Journalism Association of Community Colleges.
Saturday July 13 weather permitting -
“Night Photography, Closer to Home” w/ Steve Thompson.
The location is Island Lake north of Humboldt.
Steve will plan on being there around 10:00PM.
From Humboldt go North on State Highway 19 to 248th Street, about 10 miles. On this corner is Buffalo Trading post. Go west 3 miles, you will find a gravel parking lot on the north side of the road. We will meet in that lot. Steve is happy to report the recent heavy rains had no ill effects on that area. On his drive to and from he did see numerous deer and a few skunks, so driver beware. This time of year, it does not get completely dark until about 11:30 so coming early can be a big help in getting set up and ready. Use the time to take test shots for both focus and exposure along with refining your composition.
Things to bring:
Camera, your widest, fastest lens, Sturdy tripod, Chair, BUG REPLLENT, Snacks, water, headlamp. Be sure to charge all your batteries and download your memory cards.
Steve selected this location because it is a relatively safe place to bring a group, you can take all paved road getting there, it is dark enough to see the Milky Way core with the naked eye, and light pollution is tolerable, only about a 30-minute drive from town. Steve will send a reminder next week when we have a little better idea if the cloud cover will cooperate.

Ken Rasmussen has organized an exciting monthly photography learning group to be held on the first Thursday of each month.
The purpose of the group is to help photographers stretch in new directions and learn techniques they may not have ever thought about or explored. The group is challenging as well as fun and each month there is a different topic of study. Ken utilizes The Great Courses series on photography so we can see how the masters approach the selected topic and they show us how to avoid pitfalls and enhance our own shooting sessions. For more information, please feel free to contact Ken at rasmussenkenneth@yahoo.com.
